Every now and then we come across an artist who not only makes great music, but challenges the status quo, inspires social change and speaks for those without a voice. Shawnee is one of those artists.

Since starting out as a Shania Twain impersonator, the Mohawk songstress has emerged as one of MTV’s ‘Top Gender-Bending Artists’ and evolved as a musician, a storyteller and an advocate. With her latest project, she aims to shed a light on the youth suicide crisis in Northern Canada and provide hope for future generations. Here’s what she had to say about the inspiration for Warrior Heart and the personal struggles that influenced it.
