“Growing up on the reservation, you listen to music you can relate to.”
For Quentin Condo, who grew up on the Mi’kmaq reservation of Gesgapegiag, that music was always hip hop. But over time, simply listening wasn’t enough. Writing and performing under the artist name Q052, he began using the art form to address taboo topics and raise awareness about the realities facing Indigenous communities and the people who live there.
In the latest DD Spotlight, Q052 talks about “truth music,” shares his powerful song Slip Away and offers some advice to the next generation of Indigenous musicians.
