Three years ago, Cree singer-songwriter Niska Napoleon quit her job, sold all of her belongings, bought a van and set out on a cross-country tour to find her sound and make a name for herself. Mission accomplished.
To date, the multi-genre powerhouse has fronted Victoria-based ska band Rocky Mountain Rebel Music, opened for the likes of Buffy Sainte-Marie and had her music featured on APTN shows including The Mix and Mohawk Girls. She’s also the founder of Rockstar Kids, an Indigenous youth program designed to ignite the spirit, provide tools for healing and deliver a spectrum of possibilities through the arts.
In the latest episode of DD Spotlight, Niska talks about honouring her roots, connecting with her audience and more.
