Hailing from amiskwaciy (Edmonton) on Treaty 6 territory, nêhiyawak is an experimental indie rock trio making waves on the Indigenous music scene. Over the past few months alone, they’ve been named Group of the Year at the Edmonton Music Awards and played gigs like Interstellar Rodeo, Winnipeg Folk Festival and The Great Escape in Brighton, UK.
But as band member Marek Tyler puts it, “There’s more to this than just three guys on a stage playing music.”
Blending traditional culture with contemporary technology, nêhiyawak manages to honour the teachings of their ancestors, connect with community and share their unique expression of Indigeneity – all while creating a sound as genre-defying as it is dynamic.
In the latest DD Spotlight, see what Marek, Kris and Matthew had to say about their creative process and more.
