Meet The Artist: Casey Koyczan

This week, more than 70 artists will be performing at BreakOut West’s Showcase Festival in Edmonton. Among them is Casey Koyczan, an up-and-coming talent who should definitely be on your radar. Meet him below.

Name: Casey Koyczan aka NAHGA

City: Yellowknife, NT

Genre: Electro-rock / live looping

A bit about myself:

I’m an Indigenous multi-instrument live-looper who utilizes a variation of effects with his instruments and voice to create dynamic layered compositions that house anecdotes of electronica, hip-hop, and rock/metal/industrial music. I represent a Northern aesthetic inspired by culture, technology, politics, and northern legends.

Holy Fuck, Ratatat, Tycho, Lorde, Grimes, Russian Circles, Run The Jewels, Odesza.

The first album I bought:

Tarzan Dan’s The Hit List.

The concert I went to:

Vans Warped Tour, 2000.

The last concert I went to:

Die Antwoord.

The last song I listened to:

Tycho – Awake.

My favourite song of all time:

Mogwai – Tracy (Kid Loco remix)

The one song I wish I’d written:

Daft Punk – Derrezed.

My dream gig:

Playing the world-wide broadcasted event when the entire planet finally depends on 100% renewable and sustainable resources.

Myself in three words:

Stoic, respectful, funny.

The best piece of advice I’ve ever received:

My dad would always tell me as a kid to “Never kiss anyone’s ass, and don’t take shit from anybody.” This advice held true throughout my life and has created many solid friendships and working relationships.

Beatles or Rolling Stones:

Rolling Stones all the way.

What I do to pay the bills:

I work full time as a “multimedia officer.” Video editing, audio editing, graphic design, etc.

When I’m not making music, I’m …

Working, relaxing, playing video games, filming music docs, helping out the community with various events, and travelling. I spend a lot of time researching music, audio responses, video games, and niche markets.

Something people would be surprised to learn about me:

I’m very self-conscious about my feet (laughs).

If my life were a song, the title would be …

Starve the Ego, Feed the Soul (The Glitch Mob)
