In Focus: Winnipeg Folk Fest 2017

When Winnipeg Folk Fest showcased the Native North America workshop back in 2016, they set the standard for profiling Indigenous talent and promoting cultural diversity. This year they raised it.

Thanks to beats from DJ Shub and some phenomenal string work from Cris Derksen (casted hand be damned!), the Dub Step Pow Wow brought the Spruce Hollow stage to life on Saturday afternoon. Showcasing Shub (formerly of A Tribe Called Red) on the turntables, the set featured bone-rattling drum beats fused with contemporary cello music and traditional hoop dancing courtesy of Rylee Sandberg and Shanley Spence. Needless to say, it was an experience we were honoured to be a part of.

Here’s a look at some of the action.
